We sometimes think of them as instructors,
but in reality they come to Colony as visiting artists, mingling with the
member artists, offering skills, expertise and attention to the myriad
of talent and energy Colony generates.
They bring their slides or sometimes actual
work to be presented and discussed, they give formal talks of their experiences
and informal discussions on art in general or specific.
They judge finished work for the traveling
show and make awards before ever meeting the artists and getting to know
their work. (Awards are not announced until the Awards Banquet, Saturday
night)
An evening of formal critique of finished
work is provided and they also visit each of the 45 artists at least once
during each painting day, offering individual critique of work in progress.
Since individual "instruction" would take
up more time than is available, it's important that every artist be capable
of working and problem-solving independently. However, in the spirit of
Colony, peer critique is only a few steps away, and many members
are teachers and professional artists in their own right! (Earphones
mean "Not right now, please.")
As important as impressive credentials, is
a sense of humor, because our instructors often suffer at the hands of
our collective creative humor when the session winds down and we've painted
ourselves numb...
