A "Retrospective Exhibit" of the Art Colony,
a historical 'time-line' of works from the many painters
who have been a
part of the Colony in the past 50 years. The exhibition
will travel for two years.

| This exhibition commemorates the fiftieth anniversary
of the Mississippi Art colony which began at Allison's Wells in Way, Mississippi.
The year 1948 began a tradition of artists and teachers meeting together
to paint, study, and critique each other's work. Since the beginning,
the "Colony" has met in four different locations within the state.
Many Colony members have fond memories of workshops held at Allison's Wells
(1948-63), Stafford Springs Lodge and Dude Ranch, Heidelberg (1963-70),
The Pinehurst Hotel, Laurel (1970-73), and finally at their home of 25
years at Camp Henry Jacobs in Utica (1973-98).
Curated by Hugh Williams, a long-time friend and teacher of the Mississippi Art Colony, the exhibition consists of works that represent award-winning artists over the past 50 years. Through the years, an astonishing amount of work has been produced at Colony sessions and some award winners have won numerous times. Colony records show Millie Howell as the artist who has won the most awards during her career as an artist and Colony member. Since this exhibition will serve as a celebration of the Mississippi Art Colony, it is only fitting that the exhibit travel to other areas of the state. The exhibition schedule includes the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art (September 26 - November 22, 1998); George E. Ohr Arts and Cultural Center, Biloxi (March 1 - April 15, 1999); Cottonlandia Museum, Greenwood (May 1 - June 15, 1999: Tupelo Artist Guild Gallery, Tupelo (July 1 - August 15, 1999); and the Canton Trolio Hotel, Canton (September 1 - November 8, 1999).
